College News

  • Congratulations to all our Year 12s on their great results last year (see our results page for details)
  • Some scholarships for students entering Year 11 are still available. Good students can jump a year so students completing Year 9 should consider the option.
  • Employers have recently expressed alarm over the drop-off in VCE maths: enrolments are down as much as 14% over the last five years. All our students take both top Maths subjects so will be well placed to pursue careers where maths is needed - such careers are in demand.
  • There is much concern about university students having poor English and thus finding tertiary education too difficult. We now give six hours of English a week to Year 12 students (plus two hours of tutoring) - more than any other school, we believe.
  • We have introduced Cultural Literacy lectures for Year 12 on everything from religions, mythology and philosophy to science and history to broaden students' knowledge of the world.

The New Generation College was established as a secondary school in 2004 and moved to its present city location in 2006. The College fully occupies Level 6, 152-168 Elizabeth Street , Melbourne 3001 Australia . www.ngc.vic.edu.au

Ownership & Governance

The College is owned and governed by a not-for-profit Association, Xin Yi Dai Inc, and operates under the name New Generation College .

The College Board is chaired by Mr Jian Feng Wang.

The College is registered as a school by the Registered Schools Board of Victoria and registered under the ESOS Act to enrol overseas' students (FFPOS).

Mission

The College's mission is to provide a university-style education for VCE students that will assist each student to achieve their potential.

Corporate structure

The College is still small and in its early years so its administration is small. The Principal, Dr Neil Lennie, is the Chief Executive Officer. Business matters are administered by the Chairman, Mr Jian Feng Wang.

Enrolments

The College considers itself to be two schools in one – a local school and a school for overseas' students. Local enrolments have grown slowly since the College opened and the viability of the College is now assured. Local student enrolments stay in the twenties. Even the College had been registered for some time to take FFPOS, the first overseas' students were taken in this year. Enrolments grew steadily through the year with final numbers in the teens.

The College intends to increase its numbers for both local and overseas' students next year and intends to run separate streams for each.

Finance

The College is not-for-profit and follows commercial business practices to ensure that the finances are managed effectively and efficiently. Accounts are managed by a qualified accountant and audited as required by law.

Staff

Qualifications & Experience

Details of teaching staff qualifications and experience are listed under staff of the College website. All staff members are registered with the Victorian Institute of teaching.

Staff retention & attendance

The College has completed three full years. During that time, no staff member has resigned. At the end of 2007, one staff member retired. Staff attendance and morale is very good. In particular, the College's unique policy towards staff (details are on the website) make the school attractive to teachers. When positions are advertised, the response is enormous.

Student attendance

Local students' attendance is very good with overall rates well in excess of 90%. Students also voluntarily attend after-hours coaching and some attend Chinese language classes at the weekend: here too attendance is good.

Overseas' students are required to attend at least 80% of classes or they will be reported to authorities. In 2006, we reported one student.

Student results

The College offers only Years 11 & 12 and hence the only relevant benchmark is the VCE. The College offers a limited range of subjects generally considered more difficult. In particular, all students must take Specialist Maths and Maths Methods. The College's focus is on the ENTER score rather than the raw VCE results. The College's students did not gain one score of 40 or better last year. Nonetheless, because of the subjects undertaken, half the local students gained ENTERs of 80 or better and a quarter gained ENTERs of 95 or better. All students passed the VCE and all were offered tertiary places. One student chose to repeat Year 12 despite having gained a university offer. While the overseas' students did not score as well as local students, all gained university places.

Parent & Student Satisfaction

The College is small enough for parent satisfaction to be gauged through personal contact. This also helps in communication as, for many of our parents, English is not their first language and presents some difficulties. Over the years there have been no formal complaints made to the College. On the contrary, there have been many words of praise from parents. Student feedback is gathered from Year 12 at the end of each year and samples are on the website. Feedback has been unanimously positive.
